COLWRIT 7B: American Language and Culture: The Beat Poets

May 3, 2023

Join us for an exciting exploration of the Beat Generation and its influence on American culture in the 1950s and 60s! Our upcoming course, American Language and Culture: The Beat Poets, will delve into the works of renowned writers Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac and their impact on poetry, creativity, non-conformity, and counterculture.

Through a combination of readings, video and audio clips, and creative assignments, students will have the opportunity to explore the Beat Generation’s impact on Berkeley and San Francisco. You'll examine how Ginsberg and Kerouac's ideas led to and shaped the counterculture movements of the 1960s and 70s.

This three-week online asynchronous course, offered as Colwrit 7B, Class # 15408, is open to both matriculated UC Berkeley students and visiting summer students. There are no scheduled class times, but participation several times per week is required. All synchronous conferences or small group meetings are scheduled to accommodate students in different time zones. Assignments will be available electronically on the course website.

Enrollment is now open for this one-unit P/NP course, which runs from July 24 to August 11, 2023. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to explore the rich history and legacy of the Beat Generation.
