Colwrit 100: Writing Academic Research Papers

March 10, 2025

This course aims to help you develop an awareness of the Research Article (RA) genre, different approaches to RA development, and how to navigate the academic publishing process in general. By the end of the course, participants are expected to be able to write RAs with greater confidence.

The course is designed for anyone seeking to develop their RA writing skills:

  • Colwrit 100 is designed for undergraduate students working on major papers/ honors theses in their majors, and
  • Colwrit 200 is designed for graduate students (MA and PhD) currently working on a project and hoping to learn more about the academic publishing process.

Participants may begin the course at any stage of the research process, but the course will be especially useful to those who already have some data collected. Involvement of the student’s advisor is encouraged, but not mandatory.

  1. Each week, you will watch a lecture on aspects of RA writing and/or publishing, followed by various online practical assignments and extension activities (tasks and discussion posts).
  2. You will write a draft Introduction section of a RA or research paper based on research that is relevant to you, which you will share with classmates, from whom you will receive initial feedback.
  3. You will receive detailed feedback from the instructor on a final draft of your Introduction, which represents your first major assessment.
  4. You will write a draft of a full or partial RA (graduate students in Colwrit 200) or several sections of a research paper (undergraduates in Colwrit 100), which will be first viewed or considered by your advisor (where possible).
  5. You will submit a final draft of your full or partial RA, which will be formally assessed by the instructor. This assignment will represent your final project in the course.
