College Writing Programs lecturer and playwright Bridgette Dutta Portman co-wrote the play Pilgrimage with Humaira Ghilzai, the first Afghan-American woman to have a play performed professionally in the US. Pilgrimage, follows five women on a surprisingly unusual pilgrimage to Mecca. Last fall (2025) College Writing Programs faculty and staff went to one of the performances when the play, directed by Michelle Talgarow was staged at Z Space, a non-profit innovative arts space in the Mission District (San Francisco), in a coproduction with Golden Thread Productions.
