CWP's Pat Steenland Named Chancellor's Public Scholar
CWP Lecturer Pat Steenland has been named a Chancellor's Public Scholar and will be joining the third year's cohort in the American Cultures Engaged Scholarship (ACES) Program. Steenland's course CW 50/150AC: Researching Water in the West has led to a promising connection with leaders of the Owens Valley Paiute, who have engaged in a century of dispute with Los Angeles--and California--over water rights. Working with her students, Steeland proposes to develop an online archive of materials--archival maps, photos, diaries, etc.--pertaining to this dispute and reflecting the heretofore unpublished perspective of the tribe. This archive will be available to future scholars, tribal members, and the general public, as well as future students in CW 50/150AC, who will see first-hand that undergraduate research projects can have significant effects. Steenland is also working with Bancroft Library's Theresa Salazar on creating an exhibition of the results of this project to coincide with the hundredth anniversary of the Owens Valley Aqueduct.
