Pat Steenland has a Ph.D. in English literature from Brown University. Before arriving at Cal, she taught literature and writing at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, Brown University, and Harvard University, among others. Since 1997, Pat has taught Reading & Composition courses, research, and American Cultures courses at UC Berkeley. She was named an American Cultures Engaged Scholar in 2014 and was awarded the American Cultures Teaching Award in spring 2018. Her area of interest is exploring innovative ways of teaching undergraduate research, including teaching with primary sources and community-based research. Her current projects are the collaborative UC Berkeley-Owens Valley Paiute Project, based in Pat’s CW50/150AC class, “Researching Water in the West,” and the UC Berkeley-Library of Congress Pilot Project, a collaborative project between Cal instructors and librarians, sponsored by the Library of Congress. Its goal is to integrate innovative primary source based assignments into 1A and 1B classes at Cal in order to introduce beginning students to the experience of genuine intellectual inquiry and discovery.
