CW N133 - The Craft of Dramatic Writing

Summer 2021
Description

College Writing N133 is an introduction to the craft of dramatic writing through the study of works by professional playwrights and through composition and revision of your own playscripts. You will come to understand dramatic writing as an art and as a set of skills; you will receive an introduction to some of the elements involved in the creation of written scripts. Particular emphasis will be given to the work of generating and revising writing for the stage and, to a lesser degree, for the screen.

Dramatic writing is the original storytelling genre from which most other contemporary narrative-based writing sprang. Novels, short stories, screenplays, and even creative nonfiction have their roots in writing for the stage. Before widespread literacy, audiences came together to be entertained, thrilled, and challenged by the work of playwrights.

Plays are written to be read aloud. To that end, we will “workshop” your plays-in-progress during class. It is crucial that you hear your written words spoken; therefore, you will listen to classmates read your writing. In turn, you will be expected to lend your voice to others’ works.
