Students learn about the content, structure, and organization of academic essays. Through in- and out-of-class writing, students work on clarifying topics, organizing arguments, and supporting claims with evidence and reasoning. Students also analyze sentence structure; practice summarizing, paraphrasing, and using citations; and develop editing skills.
This course focuses on helping you build your academic writing skills. You'll develop more awareness of what academic writing is, how it is done, and what it looks and sounds like. Through analysis of academic texts, writing your own texts, and critical reflection, you'll grow into a stronger academic writer.
This course is designed for multilingual students. Multilingual refers to students who grew up speaking a language other than English or students who grew up speaking both English and another language and feel that there is some interference between the two languages in their writing. Although this is not an English grammar course, there will be lessons that draw on grammar and structure concepts that are particularly relevant in academic writing.
This is a writing-intensive course. You will complete five multi-draft revised essays and numerous smaller writing assignments. You will also complete regular informal writing assignments designed to build fluency in your writing. Drawing from second-language and applied linguistics pedagogies, these assignments will help you build a reflective and productive writing practice. This practice will serve you as you continue in your studies, informing and improving your future academic work.
There are two sections of the course: CW9C earns lower-division credit and CW109C earns upper-division credit. Contact the instructor for clarification if necessary.
