This course focuses on the culture and language of the U.S. Students learn through course readings and discussion, as well as fieldwork in the Berkeley/San Francisco community. Friday is a fieldwork day. This course is appropriate for speakers of English as well as speakers of other languages.

ESL 8: English As a Second Language

  • Grades: This course may be taken for a grade or Pass/Fail.
  • Course Fees: $972 (UC Undergraduates), $1364 (UC Graduates), $1080 (Visiting Students)
  • Course may be repeated for credit.
  • Course is also offered in Session E.

This intensive course offers students an opportunity to improve in all areas of English language. The work includes improving conversation skills, listening comprehension, reading, writing, and grammatical correctness. Students will participate in classroom activities such as oral presentations, group work, discussions, and field trips. This course is appropriate for non-native speakers of English.
